[14.05.2014 00:00:00] - Vienna still breathes the atmosphere of the former Austro-Hungarian empire. A hundred years ago, George Marco organized there chess tournaments of the stars of the chess heaven then, and the Habsburgs ruled a large part of Europe from there. Two hundred years ago, Baron von Kempelen amazed the imperial court of Maria Theresa at Schönbrunn Palace with a chess automaton – the Turk. A this year, Vienna will be the first stop of the Chess train.
The Chess train 2014 will ride from Prague to Vienna (10/10/2014) and then continue to Budapest (11/10/2014), Trencin (12/10/2014), Krakow (13/10/2014) and back to Prague (14/10/2014). Until the end of this month, you will find here information, how you can sign up and set off on a beautiful journey on board of the Chess train.
In the morning, during the ride of the train, you can play a chess tournament, at noon have a lunch in a dining car and chat with GMs and other fellow travelers, and in the afternoon or evening, you can go sightseeing in the stage cities.
In Vienna, we can recommend cafés with excellent Sacher cake and amazing chess history (e.g. Cafe Central, which was visited by Richard Réti himself), St. Stephen's Cathedral and nearby renowned restaurant Figlmüller with veal schnitzel large as pizza, or Schönbrunn Palace with a memory of a first chess automaton.
In Budapest we are going to play a chess game at Szechenyi spa and eat a pörkölt. A huge ancient castle lures us in Trencin and in Krakow, we will be curious, if we can find there large chess pieces installed in parks and squares, as we found them three years ago, when we visited Kraków during the 1st year of the Chess train.
Don't forget to invite your wife to this journey, even if she is not interested in chess and is already allergic to the chess tournaments. She will be excited about the Chess train – while you will play, she will be travelling first class and then you will go sightseeing together in a beautiful city, have a good dinner and sleep in a pleasant hotel. Chess train is really the only one chess tournament to be attented by your wife with joy.
