Grandmasters will be playing blindfolded, one of them even simul

[05.06.2016] - How many people at once can a grandmaster play against when blindfolded? For decades, the blindfold simul world record was held by Miguel Najdorf, who played blindfolded against 45 opponents. A few years ago, the record was broken by the German master Marc Lang, who managed to play blindfolded against 46 opponents. Now, the Uzbek American GM Timur Gareyev is planning to play against 47 opponents.

Gareyev’s attempt to set a new world record will take place during the first weekend of December 2016 in Prague. He is already practising and you can come and see him playing this Sunday the... [all]

Chess movie premiere in Ponrepo Cinema

Chess movie premiere in Ponrepo Cinema

[01.06.2016] - It would be quite a difficult task to find a Prague cinema with a tradition richer than that of Ponrepo. Ponrepo Cinema is situated in the historically valuable refectory of the Old Town Convent. The Convent Hall was one of Prague’s main cultural centres at the end of the 18th century and during the 19th century. It saw the performances of many Czech and foreign musicians (Beethoven, Rubinstein, Richard Wagner), it was a popular venue for balls, occasional theatre performances and exhibitions.

The Hall became part of the history of the Czech National Revival as a venue of the first Cz... [all]

Living chess and swordsmen on Strelecky Island

Living chess and swordsmen on Strelecky Island

[30.05.2016] - There are not many attractive chess events for non-chess players. The two exceptions are blindfold chess and living chess. On Saturday the 4th of June at 3 PM, the performance on the Strelecky Island will combine these two disciplines.

Come and take a look at the show full of sword duels between actors dressed up as chess pieces on a large 12m chessboard. They will be performing the blindfold game of GMs David Navara and Richard Rapport.

The tradition of living chess is quite long in many cultures, its beginnings dating as far back as the 7th century. It was a favourite pasti... [all]

The grandmasters will be competing in a match of 4 standard games in the classic tempo (counted to ELO) and the match will be commentated on by an experienced GM Robert Cvek in the commentator hall. CHESS TRAIN 2016

Master Velíšek’s paintings

Master Velíšek’s paintings

[22.04.2016] - Chess is not just a sport, but also art and a social event. The Chess Train emphasises this cultural side by choosing the authors of its posters from the ranks of famous Czech artists.

The painting for the Chess Train 2016 poster was created by the painter Martin Velíšek and you can take a look at all three of his paintings with the motif of chess and trains here. Velíšek’s playful, cheerful, maybe even punk style goes hand in hand with the view of the Prague Chess Society that chess should not be taken too seriously. That despite the seriousness and difficulty of this game, it should... [all]

CHESS TRAIN 2015

Winners of the Best Photo Competition

Winners of the Best Photo Competition

[12.11.2015] - Chess players love post mortem analyses in which they try to convince their opponent they were actually winning all the time; if only they had found the final winning move. Because there were a couple of prizes left in the Chess Train 2015 prize fund, we announced a post mortem competition for the best photo from the Chess Train.

To this day, we have received 41 photos and the two judges Pavel and Anička have chosen 7 winning ones. Although we agreed immediately on the absolute winner – Luboš Kejzlar and his photo Farewell – we debated long and hard about the other ones, consulted wit... [all]
