[05.06.2016 00:00:00] - How many people at once can a grandmaster play against when blindfolded? For decades, the blindfold simul world record was held by Miguel Najdorf, who played blindfolded against 45 opponents. A few years ago, the record was broken by the German master Marc Lang, who managed to play blindfolded against 46 opponents. Now, the Uzbek American GM Timur Gareyev is planning to play against 47 opponents.
Gareyev’s attempt to set a new world record will take place during the first weekend of December 2016 in Prague. He is already practising and you can come and see him playing this Sunday the 5th of June at 10 AM at Michna Palace on Kampa Island (entry via Všehrdova Street), where Timur Gareyev will be playing blindfold chess against 12 opponents and on top of it all, he will be riding a bicycle as well!
Gareyev’s blindfold simul is part of the CEZ CHESS TROPHY 2016 chess festival, which begins this weekend in Prague. One of the guests will be the legendary Czech GM Vlastimil Hort, who may be holding the record among chess players in the highest number of blindfold games played. He played twice against 20 opponents, but countless times against 8 or 10 opponents.
Grandmasters David Navara and Richard Rapport will be also playing blindfolded. On Saturday the 4th of June at 3 PM, they will play a game of blindfold chess on Strelecky Island on the Vltava River in Prague city centre and their moves will be performed by living chess.
By the way, blindfold chess is a great workout for memory and imagination. You should give it a go! And come on Sunday the 5th of June at 10 AM to Michna Palace to see the performance of Timur Gareyev, the future new world record holder in blindfold simul.
