ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2016

Chess movie premiere in Ponrepo Cinema

[01.06.2016 00:00:00] - It would be quite a difficult task to find a Prague cinema with a tradition richer than that of Ponrepo. Ponrepo Cinema is situated in the historically valuable refectory of the Old Town Convent. The Convent Hall was one of Prague’s main cultural centres at the end of the 18th century and during the 19th century. It saw the performances of many Czech and foreign musicians (Beethoven, Rubinstein, Richard Wagner), it was a popular venue for balls, occasional theatre performances and exhibitions.

The Hall became part of the history of the Czech National Revival as a venue of the first Czech ball, held on 5 February 1840. The ball was organised by the playwright Josef Kajetan Tyl with the help of young poets (Karel Sabina, Vaclav Bolemir Nebesky and others). The ball was not only a successful social event; it was also a political act which found its followers all around the country. It is also worth mentioning that in 1883 the Hall saw the first performance of a new social dance – “ceska beseda” – initiated by the famous poet Jan Neruda. Another milestone for this building will be Saturday the 4th of June: the premiere of the Chess Train movie by the British Estonian director Maris Flabba. Watch the trailer and if it catches your attention, join us at the premiere in Ponrepo Cinema on Saturday. The movie will be screened in English with Czech subtitles.

The Chess Train movie premiere is part of the CEZ CHESS TROPHY 2016 chess festival.
