[22.09.2015 00:00:00] - On the last August Friday, fifteen chess players went on a fifteen kilometres long journey to the ruins of the castle Navarov, in order to launch the luxurious edition of David Navara’s book Můj šachový svět and to play a simul with the grandmaster at the end.
From Plavy in the Jizerské Mountains we took the picturesque Palacký track along the Kamenice River towards the south. During the journey we detoured only once: to the ruins of the mystical castle Navarov. No one knows why the castle was built and how it managed to function, as there were no villages around to support it. The badly accessible remains of the castle dominate the sharp hilltops.
To launch the limited luxurious edition of the book Můj šachový svět we used a 20 yo slivovitz and we also put on special T-shirts for the ceremony :) A beautiful book deserves a dignified ritual.
After the ceremony, we descended back to the valley and continued along the Kamenice to its confluence with the Jizera. On this picturesque place, there is only a bridge over the confluence, a railway station on a single-track railway, hydroelectric power station, and the Pod Spálovem Hotel. That’s where we had the well-deserved beer and a tasty roast, and played a simul with the best Czech chess player. Or rather he played with us: he started a quick-fire game and within half an hour he beat all his eight opponents.
We are leaving Plavy. The first row from the left: the senior doctor of the General University Hospital Josef Hořejš, grandmaster David Navara, Hana Modrová and the president of the Prague Chess Society Pavel Matocha.
The track goes through the beautiful landscape of the Jizerské Mountains along the wild Kamenice.
The unconquerable castle Navarov towered high over the Kamenice. Both his name and history remain a secret.
The “to Navarov with Navara” T-shirts: the ceremonial robe.
The limited and luxurious edition of the book Můj šachový svět was launched with a 20 yo slivovitz.
After the 15 kilometres long journey, grandmaster Navara also managed a simul sprint in the Pod Spálovem Hotel.
No one got a look in; not even the strong player of ŠK GROP Akaki Sharashenidze. Within half an hour, the best Czech chess player won all eight games.
